Once banned in Europe due to its poor quality and peasant status, more recent research has revealed that this obscure cultivar spent centuries enthusiastically cross-pollinating its way across the continent, ultimately producing the wine world’s most impressive family tree - boasting Chardonnay, Riesling, and Gamay to name only but a few.
